Past workshops

In this workshop, we’ll briefly cover the history of the craft and then move on to practicalities. We’ll discuss stencil options, and the characteristics of your process that will affect your final print. Students will create their own paper stencils and then practice printing on paper (greeting cards!), before printing on their choice of flour sack towels, wine bags, small zipper bags, or tote bags. You’ll walk away with your stencil, your practice paper prints, and your two final prints. And you’ll have the knowledge to come back any time to do more screen printing here, using CRAFT’s screens, squeegees, and paints.

With block printing, you can create your own design to personalize cards, tote bags, wrapping paper, that super soft t-shirt that's too faded and needs some new color. Learn how to plan designs, transfer images onto your block, work with a variety of tools, and print without a press. You'll leave with two blocks of your designs, a printed tote or pencil bag, and paper prints--as well as the knowledge to come back to CRAFT and do more block printing on your own.

No experience necessary, and you don't even need an idea of what to print. Just come ready to get crafty!

Learn the basics of fabric dyeing, ombre technique, and how to use shibori methods to create unique and beautiful pattens. Shibori is basically Japanese tie dying, but its history goes back to the 8th century. In fact, the reason we know it dates to the 8th century is because cloth dyed with these techniques was donated by the Emperor Shomu to the Todai-ji, a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan. From the Emperor of Japan to you, glorious resident of Austin! CRAFT will provide four flour sack hand towels for you to dye and take, and you'll leave the workshop with the skills to do more dyeing on your own.

Decoden started in Japan as a way for people to personalize their phones. Denwa is the Japanese word for phone, so it’s literally a short way of saying “decorate phone.” But it’s not just for phones anymore, and in this workshop, we'll make a pendant for a necklace or keychain. We'll use Shrinky Dink, silicone, cutesy figurines, gems, cake-decorating accessories, and more to make one-of-a-kind works of art. All materials, including a necklace chain for each participant, will be provided, but also feel free to bring your own cutesy items to work into your pendant!)
